Operators of Adult Bookstore Fined, Put on Probation

Operators of Glendale’s only sexually oriented bookstore were fined and put on probation Tuesday for violating city zoning laws.

Glendale Municipal Judge Cheryl Krott fined Daniel Bishop, president of Unique News & Video, and store manager Gary Enea $850 each and sentenced them to two years of unsupervised probation.

The two men were found guilty in November of violating a city use and occupancy permit by illegally installing about 20 token-operated video booths.

An attorney for the two men has appealed their convictions.

During the trial, Senior Assistant City Atty. Scott Howard presented evidence suggesting that sexual liaisons between men took place in some of the booths that had holes cut in the walls.

Krott ruled that the permit issued to the San Fernando Road store allowed only for retail sales and video rentals.

Krott ordered the arcade shut down by Tuesday.

A decision on whether the video arcade must be permanently removed will be made in February after the city reviews a zoning change requested by Bishop and Enea that would allow the booths to remain, Howard said.
