Huntington Park : Police Officer Fired

Share

Huntington Park has fired one police officer and disciplined another after a man they arrested died shortly after being being taken into custody.

On Monday, the City Council fired Officer Peter McGuire and suspended Officer Roy Segura for 30 days without pay, said Craig Robinson, assistant city administrator.

McGuire has appealed the firing to the city’s Civil Service Commission, but no hearing date has been set, Robinson said. Segura has not appealed the disciplinary action. The two had been on paid administrative leave during an internal police investigation.

Acacio Ramirez, who also used the name Jose Robles, died Sept. 15 of injuries he sustained while being arrested by Huntington Park police, the Los Angeles County coroner determined.

McGuire, Segura and a third officer went to Ramirez’s Seville Avenue home to investigate a report of a domestic dispute. Less than two hours after he was arrested, Ramirez died at a Lynwood hospital.

The district attorney’s office is investigating the death, but no charges have been filed.

Ramirez’s children have filed a $6-million suit in Superior Court against McGuire, Segura and the city, alleging that the officers used excessive force during the arrest.
