Local News in Brief : Probe of Animal Shelters

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has ordered an investigation of the six county-run animal shelters. The investigation comes after a Humane Society audit alleged that animals, employees and the public are endangered by some practices at the shelters.

The audit, which was conducted on behalf of the county, reported that security at the shelters was inadequate, workers were poorly trained, sanitation was sloppy and safety practices were inconsistent. The report also called for an internal investigation of allegations of criminal misconduct, including the theft of animals.

Department of Animal Care and Control officials said Humane Society investigators had failed to point out successful programs at the shelters and added that some of the society’s recommendations to improve security and training were already being implemented. Department Director Brian Berger said he will report back to supervisors within 90 days.
