The Orange County Sanitation Districts have received a $50,000 check from Southern California Edison Co. for conserving energy at the districts’ two major wastewater treatment plants.

The check is a “symbol of our continuing, dedicated effort to conserve energy as part of overall commitment to protecting precious resources,” said Don Smith, the districts’ board chairman.

The payment was for the districts’ participation in Edison’s Energy Management Hardware Rebate Program, in which old sludge-drying equipment is replaced with newer, more energy-efficient machines.

The new equipment is expected to cut the districts’ annual electric bill by $500,000.

So far, the districts have received $120,000 in rebates during the two years they have been part of the program.

The districts operate treatment plants in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach.
