Truth in Geckos

Share

Please advise Sheila Benson of a small, and by all means trivial, error in her review of “Wall Street” (“ ‘Wall Street’ Lays an Egg,” Dec. 11).

Contrary to popular opinion, geckos do not have “suction cups” on the ends of their toes. In truth, each gecko digit possesses a complex pattern of hairs or bristles, which unerringly find irregularities and crenulation on what, to us, appear to be the smoothest of surfaces (even glass).

By bracing themselves against these irregularities, the gecko is able to apply enough frictional force to overcome the effect of gravity on his tiny little body.
