I am indignant over an episode of “A Year in the Life.” It was the Thanksgiving episode, during which two adults hitchhike home from the airport. What sort of example does this “family show” offer the young people across America? “A Year in the Life” portrayed these professional-type adults using hitchhiking as a viable alternative when they are unable to locate a cab or rent a car. These adults do not perceive hitchhiking as dangerous or potentially fatal; instead, they hitchhike and arrive home safe and sound. Young viewers might conclude that “thumbing” is a perfectly acceptable means of transportation. This was not the good, right or moral thing to do. In real life, the foolish act of hitchhiking could result in hospitalization or worse.
