Orange County 1988 : A Look at the Year Ahead : COUNTY : Two Supervisors, Funding for Jail Will Be on Ballot

Two of the county’s five supervisors face the voters in 1988, but so far neither Roger R. Stanton nor Gaddi H. Vasquez has an opponent.

Stanton was first elected supervisor in 1980 and had no opposition in 1984. He has said he is interested in running for the congressional seat of Rep. Robert E. Badham (R-Newport Beach) when Badham steps down. The congressman has given no indication that he is ready to retire, though.

Vasquez was appointed by Gov. George Deukmejian to fill the nearly two years left in the term of Bruce Nestande, who resigned last January midway through his second term to become vice president of Arnel Development Co. Vasquez, 32, had been chief appointments secretary for Deukmejian and before that a Nestande aide for four years.

The makeup of the board could change next year if Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder decides to run for Congress. Wieder has said she is interested in the seat of Rep. Daniel E. Lungren (R-Long Beach) if the Legislature confirms Lungren as state treasurer. Deukmejian nominated Lungren for the post to succeed the late Jesse Unruh.

The supervisors plan to ask voters in November to approve a property tax increase to pay for a 6,000-inmate jail in Gypsum and Coal canyons. Most county officials said they expect voters to reject the proposal, which would force the county to find another way to finance the lockup.
