Adrian Cronauer, the real-life Vietnam disc jockey portrayed by Robin Williams in “Good Morning, Vietnam,” says being the subject of a Hollywood comedy is a tad bizarre. “There’s this guy up there, and he’s Adrian Cronauer. But I’m Adrian Cronauer. Only, he’s me, I’m not me, and he’s up there and I’m down here,” Cronauer said in an interview with the Associated Press. During the Vietnam War, Cronauer was known by his broadcast greeting: “Goooooood morning, Vietnam!” The 49-year-old Philadelphian toyed with the idea of screen writing in the late 1970s when he and Saigon radio pal Ben Moses wrote a TV script based on Cronauer’s experiences at Armed Forces Radio in Vietnam. But at the time, Cronauer said, “Nobody wanted to hear anything funny about Vietnam.”
