The National Coalition of the Homeless, Sasha Bruce Youth Work Inc. and five homeless children filed suit to force the Education Department to accelerate distribution of more than $5 million to make it easier for homeless children to enroll in school. The money, which was appropriated last July by Congress, has not been distributed to states because the agency has “taken a leisurely approach” to the program, the suit charged. The suit filed in U.S. District Court in Washington seeks a preliminary injunction to force the Education Department to advance the deadline for receiving applications for state grants from April 30 to Feb. 15. A study released by the coalition said 34% of children in homeless shelters were not attending school.
