Local News in Brief : Grant to Health Agency
A private health care agency serving the poor in the east San Fernando Valley has been awarded a $590,000 federal grant to provide medical and mental health assistance to the Valley’s homeless, officials announced Tuesday.
The one-year grant to the Northeast Valley Health Corp. will finance a “mobile health clinic” operating out of the Valley Shelter for the Homeless in North Hollywood, said Lou Garcia, executive director of the private, nonprofit health corporation. “We will go to shelters, to the parks, underneath bridges to find them and offer medical care,” Garcia said.
The corporation, which runs clinics in Pacoima and San Fernando, also was selected to distribute an additional $1.4 million in federal funds to six nonprofit health care agencies in Los Angeles County. The Watts Health Care Foundation received the largest grant, $600,000, while organizations in Venice, East Los Angeles and the Skid Row and Central City areas received between $101,000 and $200,000 to expand health care programs for the homeless.
