Local News in Brief : L.A.’s Bias Suit Settled

Share

The first lawsuit filed by the Los Angeles city attorney’s office under the city’s new law prohibiting discrimination against women, minorities, homosexuals and the handicapped at most large private clubs was settled Tuesday when the Brentwood Country Club agreed to rewrite a policy limiting access of women members to its restaurant and golf course.

City Atty. James Hahn announced that the country club agreed in the out-of-court settlement to open its Men’s Grill restaurant to women during all hours, instead of barring women until 3:30 p.m., and to lengthen the hours during which women members are allowed to play on the club’s golf course.

A number of Los Angeles clubs have brought women into their memberships in recent months, and the question of exclusive male facilities has been an issue at several of them.
