NHL Roundup : Peter Stastny Scores 300th Goal in Nordiques’ 5-1 Win

It has been eight years since the Stastny brothers came out of Czechoslovakia to dazzle the National Hockey League.

Tuesday night at Quebec City, Canada, Peter reached a milestone, scoring his 300th goal, and Anton also had a goal to lead the surging Nordiques to a 5-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

Peter’s goal was the middle one in a three-goal flurry in just 62 seconds in the second period that turned a close game into a romp.

Except for last season, when injuries slowed him, Peter has scored at least 32 goals each season. He has 25 in just 31 games this season. Anton’s 15th goal this season gave him a lifetime total of 233.

The third victory in a row moved the Nordiques ahead of the Sabres andinto third place in the Adams Division.

“It’s nice to score 300 goals,” Peter said, “but I will know I’ve been a star in this league when I get 1,000 points (he has 847).

“There were times last year with all the injuries that I wondered if my career was coming to an end. But I worked hard in the off-season and I feel really good. I think I’ll reach my goal.”

Peter is 31, but he has played hockey most of his life. He was a star of the Czechoslovakia Olympic team before joining the Nordiques before the start of the 1980-81 season.

New York Islanders 3, New York Rangers 3--Pat LaFontaine scored on a breakaway with 2:13 left in regulation at Uniondale, N.Y. to get the slumping Islanders a tie.

Although they are 1-5-2 in their last eight games, the tie enabled the Islanders to move into a tie with Philadelphia for first place in the Patrick Division.

It appeared the Rangers would win their third in a row when Walt Poddubny’s second goal of the game gave them a 3-1 lead early in the last period. But Alan Kerr brought the Islanders within a goal at 8:07.

Pittsburgh 4, Boston 4--Chris Dahlquist scored with 3:47 remaining in regulation at Pittsburgh to get the Penguins a hard-earned tie.

Third-period goals by Rick Middleton and Cam Neely had given the Bruins a 4-3 lead. But Dave Hunter of the Penguins picked up a loose puck behind the Bruins’ net and flipped the puck to Dahlquist for a slapshot from the left face-off circle.

Montreal 4, Vancouver 1--Bobby Smith scored twice and goaltender Patrick Roy stopped 24 shots in the Canadiens’ win over the Canucks at Vancouver, Canada.

Goals by Guy Carbonneau and Shayne Corson gave Montreal a 2-0 lead after one period. They made it 3-0 on Smith’s first goal at 3:15 of the third period.

Canucks scoring leader Tony Tanti spoiled the shutout at 8:55 when he cut through the slot on the power play and lifted a rebound over sprawling Roy. Smith’s second goal concluded the scoring at 18:05.
