The Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust of Miami has given $3.85 million to the UCLA School of Medicine to fund research in cellular biochemistry.

The grant, which establishes the Lucille P. Markey Program in Cellular Biochemistry, will provide money for recruitment of faculty, symposiums on cell biology, lectures by distinguished visiting scientists, renovation of facilities and the purchase of new equipment, according to a UCLA spokesman.

Dr. Robert J. Glaser, director of medical science for the Markey trust, said the grant will support interdisciplinary research on distortions of normal biological processes and how those changes affect the structure and function of the human body.
