U.S. truck production rose 8.5% in 1987, partly offsetting a 9.5% decline in domestic production of cars, according to a trade publication. Ward’s Automotive Reports said U.S. auto makers produced about 10.9 million cars and trucks in 1987, the 11th-highest yearly output in the history of the domestic industry. Domestic vehicle production was estimated by the publication at 10,893,000 this year, down 3.8% from 11,318,959 in 1986. Ward’s said the biggest decline was posted by General Motors Corp., whose domestic production fell 16.7% to an estimated 3,595,000 cars from 4,316,211 in 1986.
