Third-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch rallied to defeat Australian teen-ager Nicole Provis, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, Thursday in the third round of the $150,000 Ariadne tennis tournament at Brisbane, Australia.

Provis came within two points of beating Kohde-Kilsch before the West German rallied to advance to the quarterfinals.

Another West German, unseeded Claudia Porwik, upset fifth-seeded Australian Dianne Balestrat, 6-3, 6-2, in the only other third-round match completed in the 56-player warm-up tournament for the Australian Open. Play was interrupted several times by rain.

Kohde-Kilsch will play unseeded Manon Bollegraf of the Netherlands in today’s quarterfinals, while Porwik will face top-seeded Pam Shriver.

Second-seeded Kelly Evernden of New Zealand and sixth-seeded Ramesh Krishnan of India advanced to the quarterfinals of the $115,000 New Zealand Open at Wellington, New Zealand.

Evernden defeated Omar Camporese of Italy, 6-3, 7-6, while Krishnan rallied to defeat Todd Witsken, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

The wind that has plagued the tournament for the first three days was joined by rain Thursday, forcing the players indoors to complete second-round matches.

Menno Oosting of the Netherlands scored the only upset of the day by defeating third-seeded Australian John Frawley, 6-3, 7-6.

Evernden, shooting for his fourth successive win in the event, breezed through the opening set before a lapse in concentration saw him forced to a second set tie-breaker by Camporese, who was beaten in the qualifying tournament last weekend but got into the main draw when Kelly Smith failed to turn up for his opening match.

Seventh-seeded Jeremy Bates of Britain also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory over John Ross.

At Adelaide, Australia, teen-ager Roger Rasheed upset fellow Australian Carl Limberger, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, in the second round of the $93,400 South Australian Open.

Rasheed, ranked No. 565 in the world, said he had gambled on his fitness by entering the tournament. He missed three months of play due to a back injury.

Bud Schultz also advanced to the final eight with a 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 win over Australian Simon Youl.
