Japanese Premier Lists Goals for His Talks With Reagan
Japanese Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita said Friday that he hopes to forge friendly ties during his first meeting with President Reagan in Washington this month to overcome problems between the two trading partners.
During a New Year’s Day press conference, Takeshita called U.S.-Japan relations the “cornerstone of Japanese foreign policy” and said he will emphasize mutual understanding and close personal ties with Reagan during the Jan. 12-15 visit.
Takeshita said he is sorry about a recent U.S. decision to block Japanese firms from bidding on U.S. construction projects.
“It is a matter of regret because Tokyo and Washington are continuing efforts to settle trade disputes through dialogue,” he said.
During the visit, he and Reagan will exchange views on global disarmament.
