George Argyros, chairman of the Board of Trustees of Chapman College, tonight will receive a first-of-its-kind award from the Council of Independent Colleges at the council’s annual meeting in San Diego.
Jerry Derloshon, a spokesman for Chapman College, said the council’s award to Argyros will honor him for “exemplary volunteerism and philanthropy to higher education.”
The council has previously given awards to outstanding corporations that help private colleges. But the award to Argyros is the first ever to an individual, council officials said.
Argyros, a resident of Newport Beach, is chairman and chief executive officer of Arnel Development & Affiliates of Costa Mesa. He also owns the Seattle Mariners baseball team.
Argyros has been on the board of Chapman College since 1973 and has served as its chairman since 1976.
