5 Shasta County Libraries Reopen After Budget Bind

REDDING, Calif. — Less than three months after they closed for lack of money, five Shasta County public libraries reopened Tuesday with $220,000 from the county’s reserve fund, officials said.
The libraries, including the main branch in Redding, will operate part time until June 30 and will no longer provide reference librarians or children’s program.
Two other libraries are scheduled to reopen for two months later in January with $3,608 raised by residents of this rural county 240 miles northeast of San Francisco.
Supervisors shut the doors of the county’s 10 libraries Oct. 15 to help meet a $2.6-million deficit in the 1987-88 budget. They also closed Shasta General Hospital and reopened a clinic to meet state obligations to the poor.
On March 1, county residents will vote on a half-cent sales tax to provide $4.9 million to finance libraries.
