Two Anaheim city councilmen Wednesday entered the campaign to block construction of a maximum-security jail in Gypsum and Coal canyons near Anaheim Hills by donation $1,000 each to a group trying to place the jail site issue on the June ballot.

Councilmen Fred Hunter and William D. Ehrle announced at a morning news conference that they would “put our money where our mouth is” by actively campaigning for the ballot initiative.

The two councilmen recently mailed 10,000 letters to registered voters in Anaheim Hills, asking for donations and signatures for the campaign against a 6,000-bed jail in the canyons.

Hunter and Ehrle indicated that they opposed the jail site because of the estimated $660 million it would cost to build the facility.

The initiative campaign is being sponsored by Taxpayers for a Centralized Jail, a countywide citizens coalition. The group must gather 66,000 signatures of registered voters by Feb. 11 to put the measure on the June ballot.

Marsha Miller, a spokeswoman for Taxpayers for a Centralized Jail, said that nearly 28,000 signatures have been collected so far and that the group has spent about $20,000 of the campaign. In addition, Miller said city councils in Anaheim, Yorba Linda and Placentia have formally endorsed that petition drive.
