A $50,000 gift provided by a Santa Ana couple will kick off a drive by the South Orange County YWCA to create a $1-million endowment fund for the YWCA Hotel for Homeless Women in Santa Ana.

The organization will formally thank Peter G. Muth and his wife at 4 p.m. Monday( at YWCA headquarters in Santa Ana.

South Orange County YCWA Executive Director Mary Douglas said the Muths’ gift will provide “a major impetus” to efforts to generate community interest in the project. “We want to build a base of support,” Douglas said.

Douglas said it may take at least three years to raise $1 million for the hotel.

Once the money has been raised, it will be invested and the interest will be used to pay the hotel’s operating expenses, Douglas said. “We would not be dealing with those flamboyant investments and it would all have to be very, very, solid,” she added.

Douglas estimated that the hotel has helped at least 225 homeless women from around Orange County since its opening last March.
