Local News in Brief : Countywide : Cox Elected Presiding Superior Court Judge
Phillip E. Cox was elected presiding judge of the Orange County Superior Court by his colleagues Wednesday.
Cox, 58, of Los Alamitos said that he is pleased with his selection and that he has yet to determine priorities for his one-year term beyond “cutting the backlog” of cases.
Cox, who described himself as a conservative, was named to the Superior Court bench by former Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. He served as mayor of Los Alamitos from 1974 to 1977.
Cox has spent most of his time on the bench handling criminal cases.
Cox earned his law degree at the University of Virginia, is a Korean War veteran and is married with two children.
As presiding judge, he will make assignments for the 54 Orange County Superior Court judges, chair the court’s policy-making arm and lead the bench in dealing with local and state legislative bodies.
