Kansas City Southern Industries said it will continue to press its bid for Southern Pacific Transportation Co. despite a previous agreement by Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corp. to sell the railroad to Rio Grande Industries for $1.8 billion. Kansas City Southern, which has keenly pursued Southern Pacific to obtain a route to the Pacific Ocean, says its bid is superior to the Rio Grande agreement. Santa Fe Corp. said that it believed Rio Grande’s bid best met its criteria “in terms of the public interest, the interest of shareholders and expedition in implementing the transaction.”
