Local News in Brief : Condom Ads Under Fire
Rebuffed by a federal agency, a conservative women’s group is asking the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to order an end to billboard advertisements of condoms.
The Santa Monica-based American Assn. of Women has demanded that the board draft legislation that would ban billboard condom ads in the county. The women’s group is upset over the billboard campaign, sponsored by the Los Angeles County Medical Assn., advising people who are unable to abstain from sex to use condoms. The group contends that the ads encourage promiscuity among young adults.
The Federal Trade Commission earlier rejected a formal complaint by the group requesting an injunction against the ads. The FTC noted that the billboards are non-commercial and protected by First Amendment free speech guarantees.
