Riverside County homeowners who live in housing tracts that have been split by a crack in the earth have filed two multimillion-dollar lawsuits against the county, Rancho California Water District and developers. The suits each ask for more than $25 million in damages. One was filed by 71 homeowners, the other by 51. The suits charge that the tracts were constructed near geologically hazardous faults, that the water district contributed to instability of surrounding soils and that the county failed to protect the public.
