Commercial Parade

Charles Champlin commented on the important role of marching bands in the Tournament of Roses Parade (“Beauty and Innocence Bloom Eternal at the Tournament of Roses,” Jan. 5).
This is probably true if you attend the parade in person, but it certainly is not when you watch it on TV. Commercials are always presented when the bands go marching by!
Channel 5’s boringly repetitive “GTE--We Hear You” commercial completely blocked out the bands. Same could be said of Channel 11’s huge “Tournament of Roses” logo covering the whole screen.
Thank goodness for Honda, Toyota, etc., whose modest ads took up only a small area of the screen and got their message across while thoughtfully allowing the audience a view of the musical marchers.
