A USAir jetliner made an unscheduled stop in Kansas City early Saturday to put off an intoxicated passenger who tried unsuccessfully to open the cockpit door and an outer door during the flight, officials said.

The FBI took custody of the man, said Max Geiman, a spokesman for the FBI’s Kansas City office. The man, identified only as a 24-year-old San Diego resident, was being held at the Wyandotte County Jail in Kansas City, Kan.

The flight, bound from San Diego to Pittsburgh, had 79 people aboard and was not in danger, Dave Shipley, an airline spokesman said.

Geiman said the man probably would be brought before a U.S. magistrate Monday and charged with interfering with a flight crew in their duties.
