Women’s Basketball Roundup : Nelson Scores 24 as USC Defeats Oregon State, 73-62

Center Cherie Nelson scored 24 points to lead the USC women’s basketball team to a 73-62 victory over Oregon State Saturday at Loyola Marymount.

The women played after USC’s men lost to Oregon State in overtime and before Loyola Marymount’s night game against Azusa Pacific.

USC’s women are 8-3 overall and 2-0 in Pacific 10 play. Oregon State are 5-7 and 0-2.

The Trojans’ biggest lead was 42-27 early in the second half.

Forward Karon Howell scored 16 points for USC and Tammy Hammond came off the bench to add 15. Oregon State was led by Chelle Slamoe with 25 points and Kari Parriott, who had 22.

USC’s next game will be against UCLA next Friday night at Pauley Pavilion.

CS Long Beach 72, Fresno State 56--Center Angelique Lee scored 22 points to lead the 49er women to an easy victory at Long Beach.

The 49ers led, 38-25, at halftime.

Long Beach is 7-3 overall and 4-0 in Pacfic Coast Athletic Assn. games.

Lee, playing 33 minutes, made 9 of 14 shots and 4 of 7 free throws. She also had 8 rebounds.

Guard Shamell Coleman scored 16 points for Long Beach, and Carol Brandt came off the bench to score 12 points, making 5 of 8 shots.
