Soccer Roundup : Navarro Fills In With Winner for Brea

Share

Alex Navarro, a sophomore playing his first varsity game after seven Brea-Olinda High School starters were benched for disciplinary reasons, scored the winning goal with four minutes to play in a 2-1 boys’ soccer victory over Sonora Saturday at Brea-Olinda.

Coach Manny Toledo of Brea-Olinda (5-3-4) said he brought Navarro and two other junior varsity players up to the varsity Friday to fill in for the benched players. Toledo said he took the action because of rule violations, including lateness and improper wearing of uniforms.

Navarro also assisted on the Wildcats’ first goal, which was scored by Scott Mauer 16 minutes into the second half and tied the score 1-1. Mauer, in turn, assisted on Navarro’s game-winning goal.

“They (the benched starters) now have to prove themselves,” Toledo said. “Until I see a radical change, the reserves will start in our league opener (Tuesday against Magnolia).”

Manny Santos’ goal gave Sonora (1-6-1) a 1-0 halftime lead.

In another nonleague game:

Foothill 1, Tustin 1--Tustin’s Jason Miller and Foothill’s John McCarthy scored after a scoreless first half at Tustin. McCarthy’s goal came with 10 minutes to play. Goalie Mike Snaadt had four saves for Tustin (4-3-3) and Chris Lema had nine for Foothill.

In an Angelus League game:

Mater Dei 7, Pius X 0--The Monarchs (15-1, 1-0) got their ninth shutout in their league opener against Pius X.

Paul Oldham, Chris Mastropaolo and Sam George each scored a goal for a 3-0 halftime lead.

Mastropaolo, a defender, scored again in the second half, his fifth goal of the season. Doug West added two second-half goals and Ryan Robitaille scored one. Pius goalie Edgar Aranda had seven saves.
