More than 500 friends, family members and former teammates gathered in Baton Rogue, La., for the funeral of (Pistol) Pete Maravich, the NCAA and NBA basketball star remembered for his drooping socks and dazzling mastery of the game.
Maravich, who retired from basketball in 1980 after a professional career in Atlanta, New Orleans, Salt Lake City and Boston, died of heart disease last week during a pickup game with friends in Pasadena. He was 40.
He was eulogized Saturday as an athlete and born-again Christian in a Baptist church just 3 miles from Louisiana State University, where he shot his way into the record books in 1970 as the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer.
