Gov. Arch Moore, the silver-haired patriarch of the state Republican Party, announced today that he will seek an unprecedented fourth four-year term.

The announcement ended months of speculation that he would run for the U.S. Senate. Moore, an aggressive campaigner, won his first of two consecutive terms in 1968, then stepped down. He lost a comeback bid in 1980 to then-Gov. Jay Rockefeller, then won in 1984.
