Local News in Brief : Firm’s Sewer Line Sealed

Share

Los Angeles sanitation crews on Monday severed and sealed a sewer connection at a furniture manufacturing company headed by South Bay industrialist and prominent Republican fund raiser Julian Virtue.

The action came after the Board of Public Works voted to revoke the company’s discharge permit for plating operations because of violations involving, among other things, illegal discharges of chromium and nickel.

The company, Virco Manufacturing Corp., located in Harbor Gateway, outside Gardena, also has a discharge permit for other operations, such as painting. The board voted to monitor those discharges for one week before deciding whether to revoke that permit too.

Joel Moskowitz, an attorney for Virco, said the company stopped its plating operations last month, removed its plating equipment and “is not in the plating business anymore.”

Virtue, chief executive of Virco, served as campaign chairman for county Supervisor Deane Dana in 1984. He could not be reached for comment.
