China loses $1.6 billion a year because nearly half its truck fleet is running without cargo, according to an official newspaper.

A front page story in Economic Information said the waste was due to bad management of truck firms and lack of coordination.

China had 2.5 million trucks, or 60% of the nation’s transport capacity, which were empty 47.9% of the time.
