Rock star Eric Clapton was fined $220 and had his license revoked for six weeks Wednesday by a magistrate in Stroud, England. Clapton, 42, who admitted passing a police car at 111 m.p.h. in his Ferrari on the M5 motorway last September, had hoped to avoid losing his license. The lawyer for the rock ‘n’ roller, who once recorded the LP “Wheels on Fire,” argued that the driving ban would hamper the British singer-guitarist’s charity work. The attorney said Clapton was on his way to a charity cricket match when he was stopped. Instead, Magistrate Adrian Holloway told Clapton: “You have a bad driving record, and in view of that and the high speed, we must disqualify you.”
