East Germany’s Katarina Witt earned five perfect scores in her short program, and Soviet world pairs champions Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov won the first gold medals in the European figure skating meet Wednesday at Prague, Czechoslovakia.

Witt, the 1984 Olympic champion, turned in a record-breaking performance to a medley of Broadway songs, highlighted by “Hello Dolly.” The five perfect scores are the most ever in singles in an international competition for the short program.

Despite the five perfect scores, Witt is still second in the overall competition behind the Soviet Union’s Kira Ivanova going into tonight’s long program.
