Panel Calls for Task Force on Development
After hearing two hours of testimony from state and local planners and transportation officials on the projected impact of three major commercial projects in Hawthorne and Redondo Beach, the Lawndale Planning Commission on Wednesday called for formation of an intercity task force to mitigate the cumulative effects of development in the South Bay.
The recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council.
The commission also said the city may need a consultant to review environmental studies on projects in other cities, and to evaluate the impact of such development on Lawndale.
Commissioner Gary McDonald said 12 projects are expected to add about 29,000 vehicles a day to the area’s congested streets. He said that because of gridlock conditions at rush hour, it takes rescue units up to 15 minutes to reach emergencies in Lawndale.
In addition to safety concerns, residents complained of noise and traffic problems they said have been created by increased commercial development.
