Bankruptcy filings climbed by nearly 17% last year in the 15-county coastal Northern California district. The 19,428 filings in 1987 set a record and represented the fourth straight year of increases, said Paul Karney, clerk of the Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California. He said the court is the nation’s third largest for bankruptcies, behind Los Angeles and Chicago. The year’s bankruptcies were not broken down between businesses and individuals, but Karney said figures for the three-month period ended Sept. 30 showed that less than 14% were business filings.
