The Center for Auto Safety asked the Transportation Department today to order the recall of about 700,000 General Motors H-cars for sudden acceleration linked to 300 accidents.

The Ralph Nader-founded consumer group said the cars have a 1-in-2,300 “runaway” accident rate, the highest of any domestic model. The center released internal documents indicating that GM engineers have recommended a safety recall of the cars, which include the 1986-88 Oldsmobile Delta 88 and Buick Le Sabre and the 1987-88 Pontiac Bonneville. GM contends that the cars are safe and that the accidents were caused by driver error.
