A proposal to build a new arts complex on the Cal State Los Angeles campus has received a boost with a $2.1-million gift from Harriet and Charles Luckman. It is the largest private donation ever made to any of the 19 California State University schools.

The arts complex, which will be named after the Luckmans, will include an art gallery, two theaters and an outdoor exhibition area. Construction is expected to begin within a year or two and cost $21 million, to be funded in part with state money, a campus spokeswoman said. More details on fund raising and design are to be announced in March, she said. The J. Paul Getty Trust previously pledged $500,000 for the gallery.

Charles Luckman, the former chairman of the board of the California State University system, founded The Luckman Partnership, a large architectural and planning firm in Los Angeles. His wife has been active in various civic and arts organizations.
