New City Clerk Appointed

Pamela S. McDaniel has been appointed city clerk of Artesia. McDaniel 30, replaces Betty Wallis, who resigned to become city clerk of La Habra. McDaniel has worked for Artesia nearly three years as account clerk and deputy city clerk. A graduate of Norwalk High School, McDaniel attends Cerritos College. She plans to transfer to California State University, Long Beach, and earn a degree in business administration.

Art by 2 Students Exhibited

Artwork by Ana Alvarez and John Lindsey, 11th-grade students at Centennial High School in the Compton Unified School District, was chosen for exhibition at the sixth annual high school show at the USC School of Fine Arts. Alvarez’s untitled work was a pencil rendering of a man’s hand holding an apple, and Lindsey’s piece was a crushed-can still life in chalk and charcoal. Their work was selected from almost 400 entries submitted by more than 70 public and private schools in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Student Editors, Artist Win

The Rio Hondo College student newspaper, El Paisano, won 11 awards, including first place for general excellence, at the Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges competition held recently at Pierce College in Woodland Hills. Editors for the winning issues were spring semester students Sandra Molina and Sylvia Viramontes and fall students Louis Lopez and John Guerrero. Editorial cartoonist Joe Cepeda, whose one-man show is on display in the college library gallery, won three first place awards, a second place and a third place for various illustrations.

Gay Center Board Members

One in Long Beach has reelected three members of its board of directors, Barbara Kalish, David Shealor and Mark Borden, and elected new members Shannon O’Sullivan, Avery Lochen and Geoff MacIntosh. Carry-over board member Bob Lawson succeeds Patty Moore as chairman. The board’s main responsibility is to raise funds for The Center, a social and support facility for the gay community in and around Long Beach. Last year’s budget was $350,000 and this year’s is expected to be nearly $400,000.
