In the first such long-distance air raid this year, Iraq said its warplanes blasted Iranian oil installations on Lavan Island, in the Strait of Hormuz at the southern end of the Persian Gulf. The official Iraqi News Agency, monitored in Cyprus, said the jets flew 500 miles to bomb the island, which the Iranians have been using as their main offshore oil-loading facility. There was no immediate confirmation of the raid. Attacks on Lavan Island and nearby oil facilities in the southern gulf are difficult because refueling in flight is required.
