Radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Soviet Union 21 months ago may force British authorities to maintain restrictions on hundreds of sheep farms for up to 30 years, according to an independent report. The Country Landowners Assn., a group representing farm owners, reported that since the reactor fire spewed radioactivity across Europe, many areas of northern Wales, England and Scotland still record radioactive levels exceeding government safety limits. The report said 416 farms in Wales, 150 in England and 69 in Scotland have higher radiation levels than are deemed safe, requiring continuing restrictions that bar the sale for meat of the hundreds of thousands of sheep raised there.
