Local News in Brief : Two Escape From Jail

Share

Two inmates escaped from the Men’s Central Jail on Thursday, apparently by sliding down a 50-foot garden hose.

After Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies found the hose, with a blanket attached to its end, dangling from a rooftop recreation area at the jail during the afternoon, inmates were confined to their cells for a head count.

It took several hours for deputies to conduct a count of the 7,276 inmates of the facility near downtown Los Angeles.

Missing were Louis Ayala, 23, who was awaiting trial on a robbery charge, and Mark Guerrero, 24, who had already been sentenced for burglary. Deputies said the two men had been housed in the same section of the jail.

The end of the blanket was about 15 feet off the ground, the sheriff’s Information Bureau said, so the escapees had to drop that distance to complete their escape.

At the same jail last fall, the escape of alleged Colombian cocaine trafficker William Londono was not discovered for six days.
