A brother of lead Beach Boys singer Mike Love pleaded innocent Friday to charges that he swindled the rock ‘n’ roll group out of nearly $900,000 in the sale of a parcel of land.

Stephen Love, 40, the former manager of the group who was arrested in Hawaii earlier this month, denied a single felony grand theft charge at his Los Angeles Municipal Court arraignment.

He was released without having to post bail and was scheduled to return to court Feb. 24 to set a preliminary hearing.

The district attorney’s office charged that Stephen Love embezzled the money from a court-imposed trust involving proceeds of a sale of a parcel of land in Santa Barbara County.

The group and Stephen Love had a falling out in 1980 that resulted in his filing a breach of contract suit against the band, the documents stated. The Beach Boys, in turn, sued Love for selling the land without notifying them.

The grand theft charge was filed against Love on Dec. 16. He was arrested in Maui on Jan. 8 and brought back to Los Angeles on Thursday.

Earlier this week, the group was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in a ceremony in New York.
