CAMPAIGN ’88 : Space Parley Poor Draw

Rep. Bill Nelson, chairman of the House Space Science and Applications subcommittee, is launching a space shot next month. Destination: New Hampshire and Iowa.
The Florida Democrat, one of space exploration’s most fervent supporters in Congress, is holding hearings on the U.S. space program in the two early presidential battleground states next month, hoping to attract the appearance of orbiting candidates. Of the 13 candidates from both parties, one has promised to attend--Republican long-shot Alexander M. Haig Jr., former secretary of state.
“The reason for holding the hearings is that we believe space policy has had faltering leadership in the Reagan Administration,” said Nelson aide David Dickerson.
