President Reagan will ask Congress to repeal a new law effectively requiring media mogul Rupert Murdoch to sell media properties in New York and Boston, a White House official said today.

The official, who would not be named, said the proposal is included in the President’s legislative message accompanying his State of the Union address, which he will deliver tonight to a joint session of Congress.

Reagan will ask the legislators to repeal an amendment inserted into a federal spending bill in December at the request of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass) and Sen. Ernest F. Hollings (D-S.C.).

That amendment bars a further waiver of Federal Communications Commission rules prohibiting common ownership of television and newspaper properties in the same city.
