NHL Roundup : Hannan Haunts Former Team

All-Star defenseman Paul Coffey had a big game Monday night at Pittsburgh against his former mates, the Edmonton Oilers, but he was upstaged by a lesser figure in the blockbuster deal that brought him to the Penguins.

Dave Hannan, one of four players the Penguins gave up for Coffey and left wing Dave Hunter, had his first career hat trick to lead the Oilers to a 6-4 victory.

In games that Coffey had played for the Penguins, they were 11-3-1 going into this game. Coffey scored his fifth goal and assisted on two others.

But Hannan, who played seven seasons with the Penguins, had what is known as a pure hat trick, getting all three goals in the first period, the last one with his team short-handed and only 11 seconds left in the period.

Esa Tikkanen’s power-play goal midway through the second period gave the Oilers the lead for good and ended their five-game winless streak. Wayne Gretzky missed his 13th game because of a knee injury. The Oilers are 5-4-4 without their center.

But Gretzky has begun skating for the first time since injuring the knee Dec. 30 in a victory over Philadelphia. It is uncertain when he will return, though.

Meanwhile, Mario Lemiuex has taken over the scoring lead. He leads Gretzky, 103-86.

The Oilers limited Lemieux to one assist.

Calgary 11, Toronto 3--The Flames made sure the Oilers didn’t regain first place in the Smythe Division. They scored six times in the first period at Toronto and breezed.

Rookies Brett Hull, Joe Nieuwendyk and Dana Murzyn each had two goals for the Flames.

Buffalo 5, New Jersey 2--Goalie Tom Barrasso continued his sensational play, and the improved Sabres won another at East Rutherford, N.J.

Barrasso, 10-1-1 in his last 12 starts, stopped 25 shots.
