California, New York and Massachusetts accounted for about 40% of the U.S. electronics industry work force at the close of 1986, the American Electronics Assn. reported. The three states have a combined total of 979,000 electronics employees, down 25,000 from the last state employment report for June, 1986. California led with 570,000 workers, followed by New York with 206,000 and Massachusetts with 203,000. Total electronics employment in the United States at the end of 1986 was 2.47 million. In October, 1987, the last month for which national employment figures were available, about 2.51 million people worked in electronics.
