Local News in Brief : Anaheim : City Council Approves Billboard Moratorium

Share

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to place a moratorium on construction of new billboards while it considers adopting a new billboard ordinance.

The 45-day moratorium will take effect immediately and can be extended for 10 months if a new ordinance is not adopted, the council decided.

“What we’re trying to avoid is a situation where an application could come in, and (an applicant would) begin construction of a billboard” that would not conform if a new billboard ordinance is adopted next month, City Atty. Jack L. White said.

The council this month directed the city attorney to draw up a new billboard ordinance that includes a controversial provision allowing billboards on some freeways in the city.

Council members stipulated that the proposed ordinance place tighter restrictions over both the numbers and location of future billboards, and increase fees for advertising firms.

The council set Feb. 9 as the date for a first reading of the new ordinance.
