Local News in Brief : Bid for 100 More Officers
Los Angeles City Councilmen Richard Alatorre and Zev Yaroslavsky proposed Tuesday boosting the Police Department’s authorized strength by 100 officers to 7,450 by June 30.
Yaroslavsky said the department has the money to begin recruiting but needs council approval to exceed the current authorized staffing level.
Earlier this month, Yaroslavsky proposed boosting the force by 250 officers next fiscal year, and increasing it to 8,000 officers by 1991. He said Tuesday that the 100 more officers he is proposing now would form part of the 250 he wants added by next year.
The two councilmen said their proposal was geared toward maintaining the “hiring momentum” that began last year when the city approved an increase of 250 new officers. The staffing level attained with last year’s action is expected to be reached by mid-May, Yaroslavsky said.
