Local News in Brief : Foghorn on Overtime

Share

Nine days after Redondo Beach’s King Harbor was severely damaged by storms, area residents and employees are reminded of one of its victims--every nine seconds.

The foghorn at the tip of a rock jetty between the Redondo Beach Pier and the harbor entrance blares at nine-second intervals--whether it’s foggy or not--much to the annoyance of residents in the area.

The cable that operates the light and horn was damaged during the storm, so the Coast Guard installed a battery on Friday. The battery keeps the foghorn on at all times, but if the horn were to be disconnected, the light would be also, said Chief Warrant Officer Charles Marshall. The cable should be repaired or replaced by the end of the week.

A spokesperson for the city’s Harbor Patrol said many people have complained about the noise. How far it can be heard depends on wind and weather.
